Brown. The avoidance of sexuality (which does not extend beyond the Jim-Ántonia relationship, however) must be seen in connection with McClung's desertion of Cather, which occurred after she had composed the first two or three chapters of My Ántonia. During this time of grieving, she seemed not to trust herself to write of her own experience of love and sex. For the Cather persona and the beloved woman are not only separated: both are actually denied sexuality, although sexuality arises in distorted, grotesque forms throughout the novel.

Such disguise and displacement raises several interpretive problems. Lambert introduces one when she associates Cather's lesbianism with male identification; like many of Cather's readers, she finds her guilty of "denying her womanhood" and celebrating "male activity and institutions" in novels like My Ántonia and Death Comes for the Archbishop. But these male narrators and centers of consciousness were literary strategies, and her need to conceal lesbianism should not automatically be equated with a desire to deny womanhood.

Her priests, pioneers, and artists invest all energy elsewhere. Her idealistic young men die prematurely; her bachelors, children, and old folk remain "neutral" observers. Since she wrote within a prohibitive genteel tradition, this reluctance to portray sexuality is hardly surprising. What should intrigue us is the strange involuted nature of her avoidance. She masks sexual ambivalence by certainty of manner, and displays sexual disturbance, even the macabre, with peculiar insouciance. Though the tenor of her writing is normality, normal sex stands barred from her fictional world.
