Such sera are also used as diagnostic reagents to detect virus capsid proteins in tumors without the experimenter having to know the exact virus type. Biology of HPV Infection Papillomaviruses have a specific tropism for squamous epithelial cells and are assumed to infect primarily cells from the basal layer. This infection is abortive and may remain latent over months and probably years (Pfister 1984). Nothing is known about the physical state of the viral DNA and the virusspecific gene expre~sion in this phase.

In cases of pigmented, red, or leukoplasic papules there is a clear prevalence of HPV 16 [2, 10, 21-23]. The other potentially oncogenic HPV types may also be detected [24]. For the clinician the identification, among papules, of the potentially atypical lesions is thus of great importance since a diagnostic biopsy is recommended and the treatment guidelines will not be the same. As previously described, the application of acetic acid on penile epithelium may produce the appearance of white areas.

It reveals sub- 20 G. De Palo et al. clinical HPV infection as macular and white patch lesions in other wises undiagnosed, as demonstrated by the fact that in this series of 5 cases with florid condylomatosis visible to the naked eye, 2 had contemporaneous macular lesions, and of 6 patients previously treated and judged cured, 4 had persistent HPV infection in the form ofmacules. Nevertheless the aceto reactivity seems not to be specific for HPV infection. An aceto reactivity of genital mucosa may be observed in the presence of a specific inflammation and also in the presence of healing epithelium after electrodiathermy or cryosurgery treatments, as reported in other series [3].
